Building Trails. Building Community. Creating Opportunity.

At BUMP, we believe mountain biking should be accessible to everyone.

For more than 30 years, our volunteers have built and maintained world-class trail systems across the Birmingham region. Today, we are expanding that mission beyond trails alone by creating programs that remove barriers, build confidence, improve health, and connect people through outdoor recreation.

Through our Women’s, Adaptive, and Veterans initiatives, BUMP is helping more people discover the physical, mental, and social benefits of mountain biking.

Women’s Mountain Biking Programs

Mountain biking has traditionally been a male-dominated sport, but that is changing.

BUMP’s women’s programming creates welcoming opportunities for women of all skill levels to learn, ride, and build lasting connections. Through free clinics, group rides, mentorship opportunities, and the annual Limitless Women’s Mountain Bike Festival, we provide supportive environments where women can develop skills, confidence, and community.

Many participants begin with little or no mountain biking experience and go on to become ride leaders, coaches, volunteers, and advocates for the sport.

Our goal is simple: make mountain biking more accessible and create pathways for lifelong participation.

Adaptive Mountain Biking Programs

Everyone deserves access to the outdoors.

BUMP has partnered with organizations including Catalyst Sports and the Lakeshore Foundation to develop one of the largest adaptive mountain bike trail systems in the Southeast. These trails are designed to accommodate adaptive bicycles while remaining enjoyable for traditional mountain bikers.

Our adaptive programming provides opportunities for individuals with physical disabilities to experience the freedom, independence, and adventure that mountain biking offers. Through clinics, equipment demonstrations, guided rides, and community events, participants gain access to recreational opportunities that are often unavailable elsewhere.

By building accessible trails and offering adaptive programming, we are ensuring that outdoor recreation truly serves everyone.

Veterans Programming

The outdoors can be a powerful tool for connection, resilience, and healing.

BUMP’s veterans-focused initiatives use mountain biking as a platform to promote physical fitness, mental wellness, camaraderie, and community engagement. Through group rides, skills clinics, volunteer trail work opportunities, and special events, veterans are able to reconnect with nature and with one another.

Mountain biking offers a unique combination of physical activity, stress reduction, and social interaction that supports overall well-being. Our programs create welcoming spaces where veterans can challenge themselves, build friendships, and continue serving their communities through volunteerism and stewardship.

Why It Matters

The benefits of mountain biking extend far beyond recreation.

Research consistently shows that outdoor physical activity supports cardiovascular health, reduces stress, improves mental well-being, and strengthens social connections. For women, veterans, and individuals with disabilities, access to these opportunities can be life-changing.

By investing in inclusive programming, BUMP is helping create healthier communities while ensuring that our trails and outdoor spaces are accessible to all.
