I'm exhausted but happy because the LAKE SINGLE TRACK TRAIL is nearly complete and open to all riders for their enjoyment. BUMP not only met its goal of building 2 miles of well constructed single-track in 2 days but roughed in 1.5 miles additional trail for the future multi-use trail and built two bridges. We had over 70 volunteers on Saturday and over 40 today. It was alot of hard work but well worth it. I'm proud of the everyone's willingness to sacrifice personal time on what was a nice weekend to create something that will be enjoyed by so many for years to come. It was something to behold to see how well organize and efficient the two days went. Congrates to all volunteers and BUMP for a job well done.
I would also like to thank Stacey, Lisa and Mary for organizing the event and making sure we were well fed. Thanks to all the trail leaders: Frank, Doug, Mike, Mark M., Jim, Corbin, Chris, Richard, Kevin. Thanks to Cahaba Cycle for their participation and donation of prizes. Thanks to Oak Mtn for the donation of yearly passes. Thanks to Shelby and Pelham for constructing a portion of trail prior to this weekend, they laid the foundation that allowed us to be so successfull this weekend. Sincerely, Mark Richman.
If you missed Wednesday meeting and the details of this weekend's trail building details here they are:
1. We want to finish the construction of the Lake Trail Singletrack (~2 of 3 miles left to build out.) In addition we want to create a temporary return trail along the future 5 foot wide lake trail so we will have a rideable loop until the wide trail is built and the metal-truss bridge at the dam is in place which we expect to be completed in the next few months.
2. We will meet at the BUMP shed (Southtrailhead parking lot) at 8am on Saturday and Sunday where will form smaller work parties that will work on Nine already marked 1000 foot sections labelled "A to I". The more people who show the more ground we can cover. We will work until dusk, but you can come and go as you please, any amount of time you can give us will be appreciated. Just check in at the Dogwood Pavillion next to the shed so we can have you sign a release, a volunteer hours sheet and assign you a section. Remember free park entry for volunteering.
3. Lunch will be provided on both days. Chick-Fil-A on Saturday and Home made Vegetarian Chili on Sunday. Drinks as well.
4. Appreciation gifts to trail workers will be given away on both days including but not limited to Four $100 Oak Mtn credits that can be used for yearly passes or anything else at the park.
5. Camping opportunity both Friday and Saturday at the grass field across from the BUMP shed at the Southtrailhead parking lot. We will have a night ride opportunity Saturday night the time has not been set yet.
6. We have a need for workers to supplement some of our tools like wheel barrels, leaf rakes, loppers and any other trail building tools you would like to use. Just make sure you have your name on them so we can make sure you will get them back.
Well that sums up this weekend, Happy Trails and Thanks Mark R.
