  • I have never seen it as muddy as it was this afternoon.  It was muddy in places that I have never seen it muddy.  Maybe since the snow slowly melted today the moisture just stayed on the surface?  Yet on top of Johnson's, one section was so dry it was almost dusty.  Wierd.

  • Frost heave.  Moisure gets under the dirt, freezes and causes it to expand. When it thaws, it callapses in to mud.  Riding over the frozen grond makes it worse, so the trail should never be ridden when frozen.

  • many trails in north georgia are closed due to freeze/thaw conditions. raccoon mountain in tenn also. check the sorba forum for more info.

  • Thanks for posting this link.  I was looking for info on trail closings up that way just the other night, and did not see any closings at racoon mtn.  I am planning on going there the first weekend in March, but I will check the link again to make sure the trails are open by then.
