OK everyone I have been dying to post this. We have the green light to start work on a new trail at Tannehill Historic Ironworks State Park. This is a great opportunity for BUMP because we have a park management that is excited about the project and even motivated to help us see it through! We have put together some information about the project and you should be hearing a lot more about it soon. Keep an eye out for some information under the Trails tab on the website. We have already started working on preparations for a big kick-off work weekend for November14th and 15th. We will have free camp sites for anyone wishing to make a weekend of it. Our plan is to have an eleven mile loop almost entirely singletrack! When we break ground in November this project will have gone from concept to construction in about 12 months! Thanks to everyone who chipped in with the presentation, maps, trail marking, the MOU as well as general encouragement and information. Anytime I have asked for help someone with BUMP has always stepped up. If you are interested in helping with this project there is lots to do in a short period of time to get the ball rolling. We need people to …..

    Help lay out the trail.
    Help organize the Kick-off event.
Lead small groups for actual trail construction for the Kick-off weekend.
    Make trail signage.
    Erect a trailhead kiosk.
Put together some literature about the project as well as the Kick-off.

If there is something you specifically want to work on either post here or email me directly at jdyer@rtjgolf.com.  Thanks again for all of the effort. Stay tuned for more.

  • This is great news, will be glad to help in anyway.

I have loved this park since I was a little kid in Cub Scouts, camped out there many times and back when I was shoeing horses attended blacksmith clinics. Always loved the rustic views of the park and as strange as this may sound the park just smells good.

  • I recall an old BUMP member named Ken Hester had drawn some preliminary trails back in the 90's but nothing further happen with the idea.  So congrats Josh for seeing the plan thru to this point.  I know from experience how difficult it can be to take an idea and making it a reality, it's never as easy as it seems in the beginning.

  • Just as a note I have a reasonably nice PDF of the current fireroads out there if anyone wants it.   The back road out there is certainly aerobically challenging.

  • I live nearby and ride the backroads now. Even they are a lot of fun. Can't wait for new single track. Count me and the kids in on working when possible.

  • It is good to see there are already some members from that end of town.  I hope there are more.  I grew up there myself and rode bikes there as a kid and cann't wait to get started.

Backroads as in road bike or as in MTB?  I ride the MTB at Tannehill and the road bike in my neighborhood, but am pretty much terrified of 216.

  • 216 is a little scary in a car with all of the coal trucks.

  • Thanks Corb! That looks great.  The email blast from Bike Link went out today.  That is how it got up on Alabama Cycling News I think.  Joe said it would probably reach about 1000 people.  We need some flyers printed so we can get them out to sporting goods stores and other shops as well as inside Tannehill.  Does anybody have a good contact for cheep color printing?

  • I would just email the PDF to Kinkos and print all you want. They have best quality for the money. You can do the same with Office Max and Office Depot, but the qualtiy is not as good.

How is the club funding the Tannehill project? We have races to raise money for OM and Trussville.

  • Josh I use to be over the electronics department at Staples in Pelham and last time I checked my old buddy was still lead over the copy center there. Let me know what you need and I'll get the best quote and best quality too.

  • Wendell may be able to help us out. He did the Dead Dog flyers for a pretty good price. I'll send you his info.

  •  I'm buying a few hand tools for Tannehill.  We have not raised any money for it yet.  It's all bootstraps at this point.

  • There is an abundance of fire rakes in the BUMP shed.  I would order more 'rogue hoe' tools from Ben Meadows http://www.benmeadows.com/search/hoe/22188/.   They work great and reasonably priced.  I think it best if we purchase tools like shovels and mattocks at Lowes on Valleydale thru my commercial sales rep.   Lowes has been very good to BUMP and I think we need to send them all our future business.

  • I down loaded the Flyer today from Alabama Cycling News. Mark did a great job with it. How many copies do you need Josh?

  • Wendell,  I hate to sound greedy, but I will  take what ever I can get.  I have two uses for the hard copies.  I want to get them in some outdoor stores and more importantly I want to get into the park and promote to the campers around the halloween event there.  One of my goals with the trail is to bring new people to mountain biking as well as bringing mountain bikers to Tannehill.  If you have kids and you have never experienced tHalloween there, I hear it is really something.  It is basicly trick or treating in the campgrounds but the campers go a little crazy with the decorations.  They camp a month in advance just to reserve their camp sites.  I was there Sunday and they are already packed and decorating.  There were kids on bikes everywhere.  Among that crowd, there has got to be some people interested  in helping with the trail.  I planned on taking my bike out there and flagging down other bike riders and hitting them up personally.  There is also a main office in the park with information about the park as well as near by attractions.  It would be great to get some of the BUMP flyers like we have in bike shops as well as the "Two Miles in Two Days" flyers.  We only have a short period of time to create the kind of buzz we need to generate the labor we need.

  • Thanks,

When I get the flyers I might get you to help me beat the streets on that part of town and inside the park.

    Thanks,

  • Does anyone know how to create a gift registry for Tannehill tools and such?  Josh, Mark and Chris have some good ideas for what they need.  I believe most can be ordered online and some can be purchased locally through a business account with Lowes.

We could even have a Tannehill Baby Shower !
